General product information

Are Childs Farm products suitable for newborn babies?

All Childs Farm products are suitable for newborns and upwards other than our sun care and pillow spray, which are for babies and upwards. In line with the NHS guidance, we recommend all babies under 6 months be kept out of the sun entirely and therefore do not recommend using our sunscreen products on babies under 6 months of age. Our pillow spray is also suitable from 6 months and upwards. Our new Farmologie range is designed specifically for the needs of adult skin. However, the products are still safe to use on children above 3 years old. As with any product, we recommend younger children use the products with adult supervision and you complete a patch test 24 hours before first use on sensitive and eczema prone skin.

Are Childs Farm products suitable for skin prone to eczema?

All Childs Farm products are dermatologist and paediatrician approved as suitable for sensitive skin and safe for people who may be prone to eczema. All Farmologie products are dermatologist approved as suitable for dry and sensitive skin and also safe for people who may be prone to eczema. However, Childs Farm and Farmologie products are not a medicine or a treatment for eczema.

Are Childs Farm products suitable for adults?

Yes, due to the gentle make-up of our products, we have many adult customers who enjoy using Childs Farm products. We have also now launched Farmologie by Childs Farm, a new range of luxurious products designed specifically for the needs of adult skin. We have taken some of our favourite Childs Farm ingredients and sourced additional, finest quality and naturally derived ingredients especially formulated to hydrate adults’ dry, sensitive and even eczema prone skin.

Are Childs Farm products tested on animals?

Absolutely not! we love animals and we are proud to have been awarded the Leaping Bunny certification by Cruelty Free International, which confirms that our products are cruelty free. the Leaping Bunny is the globally recognisable gold standard for cruelty free cosmetics, personal care, household and cleaning products and demonstrates that a brand is genuinely committed to removing animal testing from its supply chain.

Are Childs Farm products suitable for vegans?

We are proud to have been awarded The Vegan Society certification which confirms that all Farmologie products are vegan friendly. All Childs Farm products are also approved by The Vegan Society as vegan friendly, with the exception of our strawberry and mint conditioner and grapefruit and tea tree hair detangler, which contain honey.

Are Childs Farm products Halal?

To be a truly Halal product, there are certification schemes and manufacturing processes that need to be adhered to. While we don’t have this certification on our products, we can tell you which ingredients are ethanol based to support you with any information required. However, we can’t confirm that our full manufacturing practices adhere to the requirements in certifying as Halal. We have a list available of the different types of alcohol used within our products on the ingredients page on our website. Where ‘alcohol’ is listed on a label, this is ethanol and so these products are not suitable as Halal. the cetearyl alcohol and the benzyl alcohol we use are not traditional alcohol (ethanol) so they are suitable as Halal. The following Childs Farm products do not contain ethanol alcohol: conditioners, moisturisers, detangler, baby oil, nappy cream, after sun, grapefruit 3 in 1, grapefruit body wash, grapefruit shampoo, watermelon and pineapple 3 in 1, rhubarb and custard shampoo, rhubarb and custard conditioner,  fig shampoo, fig conditioner, fig bubble bath and fig body wash. The following Farmologie products do not contain ethanol alcohol: pink grapefruit moisturiser, unfragranced moisturiser, pink grapefruit hand cream, unfragranced hand cream.

Do I need to patch test Childs Farm products?

All Childs Farm and Farmologie products are formulated to be extremely gentle. However, as a common sense precaution, we always recommend a patch test be carried out at least 24 hours prior to first use of any new product – particularly if you have sensitive skin. The best places to test are inside the upper arm and behind the ear but don’t patch test on skin that’s already irritated.

Is your nappy cream cloth nappy friendly?

Yes, it’s been tested by Penny Broderick and been certified as Cloth Nappy Friendly.

What is the difference between your three Childs Farm moisturisers - unfragranced, baby moisturiser and grapefruit and tea tree?

Our Childs Farm moisturisers are the same base formulation but have been created to offer different fragrance alternatives and an unfragranced option for those who prefer to avoid fragrance.

What is the star rating of the Childs Farm sun care range?

Our UVA star rating is 3, which a good level of protection and meets the EU requirements for UVA protection. As far as we know, all sunscreens that are suitable for sensitive and also eczema-prone skin have achieved a 3* rating, as it is has not been possible to achieve a 5* rating using ingredients that are suitable for sensitive and eczema-prone skin. The UVA star rating system was developed by Boots and it is not an EU requirement to have a UVA star rating. The UVA star rating system is just measure of the ratio of UVA protection vs. UVB protection. If a product has a low SPF it may still have a high level of stars, not because it is providing lots of UVA protection, but because the ratio between the UVA and UVB protection is about the same. It is important to look for a sunscreen that filters both UVA and UVB rays (broad spectrum), but particularly with a high SPF to block UVB rays that cause sunburn. Sunscreens with SPF 50 protect against 98% of UVB rays, whereas SPF 15 sunscreens only filters 93% of UVB rays. Sunscreens play an important role in protecting skin from the sun's harmful rays, and as no sunscreen can provide 100% protection it’s important to make sure this is applied and re-applied regularly as well as following other safe sun behaviours, such as wearing protective clothing, staying in the shade during the hottest parts of the day and checking the UV index.

What do I do if my child drinks a Childs Farm product?

A child may inadvertently drink one of our products and should this happen you will need to know what to do! We have spoken to the NHS in order to pass on their opinion about what you should do to give you peace of mind should this happen. Childs Farm and Farmologie products are considered to be non-toxic (non-poisonous). Swallowing our products is usually not poisonous and patients will usually make a full recovery. Should your child swallow some product and have no adverse reaction (see below), you should give them small sips of water or milk. They should be absolutely fine, and it will be no problem in introducing food within an hour. You may take reassurance by calling NHS Non-emergency on 111 to discuss the condition of your child. However, if an allergic reaction occurs seek immediate medical help by calling 999.

An allergic reaction would include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Irritation to the mouth
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of consciousness

Information to hand that will be helpful to the emergency services includes:

  • The patients age, weight and condition
  • The name of the product
  • The time it was swallowed
  • The amount swallowed

If there is a need to go to hospital, be sure to take the bottle that the child swallowed from so that the Health Care professionals can clearly see the ingredients.

Childs Farm provides this information as a general guide. Further information is available from the NHS, and essential guidance should come from your GP or other medical professionals familiar with the details of your child’s case.

What does soap-free mean (in bars) and why is it good?

Our bars are a soap-free formulation, therefore it’s a wash bar! Traditional soap bar formulations are not suitable for those with sensitive skin as the soap aspect can be very drying on the skin.

Soap has an alkaline pH of 8+, and in comparison to the skin’s pH of 5-5.5 and the hair’s of 4.5-5.5, the soap can disrupt the skin’ and hair’s natural structure leading to dryness and dull hair.

However, not to worry, the goodness of Childs Farm’s liquid products hasn’t changed in our bar range. In line with the rest of our range, all 4 bars offer a solid alternative as a gently cleansing formulation for sensitive skin.

Can I use the body wash bar on my hair?

Yes, you can use the body wash bar on your hair.

However, unlike our shampoo and hair & body wash bars, this hasn’t specifically been designed for hair as these bars contain extra conditioning ingredients to look after your hair.

How long does a bar last / how many uses can I get out of a bar?

From our user trials and studies, we’ve found that the length of use of our bars is up to 60 washes. This is obviously dependent on the amount of times you are using the bar and how much you use with each wash.

One bar is equivalent to 2x250ml bottles with each 250ml bottle providing up to 30 washes.

Can I use the shampoo bars on adult hair?

You definitely can use our shampoo bars on adult hair as all the bars still have a fantastic conditioning agent.

However, the bars were created with children’s hair in mind, therefore Haven’t been specifically tested on adults with coloured hair.

We would also recommend following up your shampoo with the pairing conditioner for the extra step of hair care!

If it’s not soap, how does it clean your body and hair?

The bars will still wash your body as the combination of the gentle surfactants used will still wash away any dirt and grime.

They contain very mild and gentle naturally derived surfactants, much like our liquid products, to gentle cleanse body and hair.

How do I use the bars? What kind of lather should I expect?

We recommend to start lathering the bar into your hands before transferring the foam onto your hair and/or body. It is totally a  user preference, as  you can absolutely use it either way  and either lather the product directly into your hair and/or body or into your hands first.
All 4 bars produce a soft and creamy lather perfect for gently cleansing.

How do I store my bar when not in use?

It’s a good idea to keep your bar dry between uses, so having something like a soap dish on the side of the bath or outside the shower (like the sink) where it’s unlikely to get too damp when not in use is ideal.

For travelling we would recommend purchasing a bar tin/travel container.

Are the bars gluten free?

None of our bars contain ingredients derived from wheat and so while none of the ingredients directly contain gluten, they are produced in factories that handle gluten and raw materials containing gluten.

Therefore while every care is taken to avoid cross contamination we would recommend patch testing before using.

Ingredients

Do you use palm oil in any of your products?

We do not use palm oil or palm kernel oil directly in our products. We do use derivatives of these in our products. Where we use these derivatives, it is really important to us that we source these sustainably and that is why we are RSPO members. By choosing RSPO sources, the oil comes from a well-managed supply chain to make a more positive impact on the environment to stop deforestation and loss of habitats as well as socially to the communities who harvest this.

Are your products suitable for vegans?

We are proud to have been awarded The Vegan Society certification which confirms that all Farmologie products are vegan friendly. All Childs Farm products are also approved by The Vegan Society as vegan friendly, with the exception of our strawberry and mint conditioner and grapefruit and tea tree hair detangler, which contain honey.

Are your products gluten-free?

All Farmologie products are gluten-free. For our Childs Farm products, our hair and body washes, 3 in 1 swim and baby 3 in 1 swim, shampoos and moisturisers are all gluten free. Our fig conditioner and fig bubble bath and our rhubarb and custard conditioner are also gluten free. However, our other conditioners, bubble baths, baby oil, hand wash, hair detangler and suncreams are not gluten free because they contain hydrolysed wheat protein and/or tocopherol. We always recommend patch testing products if you have an allergy as some of the raw materials are supplied by manufacturers who also process ingredients using gluten. Products and ingredients may also change over time so we recommend checking the label before purchasing and using any product. If you have any questions about specific products, please do get in touch with us at enquiries@childsfarm.com and we can help you further!

Are your products 100% organic?

Farmologie products are not organic but contain naturally derived ingredients and our body oil contains organic coconut oil. Childs Farm products are not organic, but contain naturally derived ingredients. Most Childs Farm products typically contain around 96% of naturally derived ingredients.

Do you use parfum in your products?

Parfum is a term used to describe the fragrance in a product. This can be naturally derived, synthetically derived or a combination of both. In some of our products we do use natural essential oils to fragrance the products. However, there are occasions where we use synthetically derived fragrances too, such as the strawberry in our Childs Farm strawberry and mint shampoo. This does not mean that synthetically derived fragrances are harmful and all of our products undergo extensive safety testing to ensure they are suitable for sensitive skin.

Do your products contain nuts and seeds?

Childs Farm products do not contain any nuts, although some Childs Farm products contain coconut oil, shea butter and argan oil. These are not classified as nuts in the UK but coconut and argan are in the US so if you have any concern about these, we do recommend that you speak to your doctor. Childs Farm products do not contain any seeds although we do use some seed oils, such as sunflower seed oil. Farmologie products do not contain any nuts, although some Farmologie products contain coconut oil and shea butter. These are not classified as nuts in the UK but coconut oil is in the US. Farmologie products do not contain any seeds. We always recommend patch testing products if you have an allergy as some of the raw materials are supplied by manufacturers who also manufacture materials containing nuts and seeds. Products and ingredients may also change over time so we recommend checking the label before purchasing and using any product. Please do contact us at enquiries@childsfarm.com if you’d like information for specific products or ingredients and our team will be happy to share this with you!

Do your products contain parabens or SLS?

Our products do not contain parabens, SLS, SLES or mineral oils.

Why do your labels not show the 'free from' logo anymore for parabens and SLS?

The European Commission have issued guidance on what claims the industry can and cannot use on cosmetic products. One claim that we should no longer make is a “free from” claim. as a result, we have updated our packs to reflect this. The product formulations are the same ones you know and love, and we have not changed our principles on what ingredients we will and won’t use in our products.

I've got an allergy - how can I find out which products are suitable for me?

We have a full list of the ingredients we use within our products available here. If you are concerned about a particular ingredient or would like some further information, please contact us at enquiries@childsfarm.com and our customer service team will be happy to check your query and help you further! Products and ingredients may change over time so we do recommend checking the label before purchasing and using any product.

Packaging and recycling

Are your products recyclable?

The Childs Farm bottles and lids are all recyclable and feature the recycling triangle on the bottom of our bottles. This means they can be simply rinsed out and placed in your recycle bin at home with your milk cartons. Our pumps can be recycled but this depends on the region so please check with your local council. Our plastic is currently made from some renewable sources and we will be increasing our recycled plastic content in our bottles in the coming year.

Issues, faulty products and returns

The pump on my new product is not popping up, what should I do?

Sometimes our pumps get a little loose in transit. Please try tightening the neck of the pump on to the bottle, then press down with the palm of your hand and turn anti-clockwise several times and it should pop up! If this doesn’t work, please do contact us at enquiries@childsfarm.com with the batch number of the bottle and our team will be able to help you further.

I've received my order and one of my products is damaged, can I get a replacement?

We’re sorry to hear this. our team will be happy to take some more details and ensure you receive a replacement so please do contact us at enquiries@childsfarm.com.

I've received a bottle of baby oil but the bottle does not look full?

Our baby oil is sold in a quantity of 75 ml, however, we do use a bigger bottle so this is why it does not look full up. The reason for the bigger bottle is for ease of use because we know that a smaller 75ml bottle will be trickier to use with oily hands! Baby oil is also one of our premium products so to use 125 ml would have been price prohibitive for some of our customers.

What should I do if I experience staining from the product?

All sun creams do have the potential to stain due to their ingredients. The best way to tackle stain removal would be to treat it as soon as the stain is noticed, we would recommend using a laundry detergent that’s designed to cut through oils and grease. A quick pre-treatment will help to break up the stain, making it much easier for your washing machine to do its job effectively. A great “life hack” from one of our colleagues to treat sun cream stains on white clothes, is to dry the clothing out in the sun. the sun is great at naturally bleaching stained white clothing in a very safe and gentle way. You can also find lots of other helpful advice online with suggestions of lemon juice, that can intensify the bleaching results of the sun, and using white wine vinegar that also helps to soften clothes. Remember to check the care labels on your clothes before treating stains, and wash at a warm but not hot temperature – hotter temperatures can cause stains to set into the fabric.
