What is eczema? Symptoms, causes & ways to manage

Eczema; it’s more common than you think! In the UK alone, eczema affects one in every five children and one in every 12 adults. Being such a widespread condition, there's a lot of information out there, and it can often be overwhelming! To keep things as easy as possible, we’re sharing answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about eczema at Childs Farm.

WHAT IS ECZEMA?

Eczema is the name for a group of non-infectious, dry skin conditions, where skin can become inflamed, itchy, cracked or sore. There are several types of eczema, with the most common being atopic dermatitis.

WHO CAN GET ECZEMA?

Atopic eczema is most common in babies and children, and often develops before their first birthday. It may also develop for the first time in children, adolescents or adults of any age. In the UK, atopic eczema affects one in every five children and one in every 12 adults.

WHAT CAUSES ECZEMA?

The exact cause of eczema is unknown, however researchers have found that those who develop eczema often do so either due to a genetic predisposition, environmental factors or allergens.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN SYMPTOMS OF ECZEMA?

Eczema symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can be present on any part of the body. Commonly affected areas are the insides of elbows, the backs of your knees, the face, hands and feet. Typically, eczema forms in patches of itchy, dry, rough skin. The skin may also look inflamed, appearing red on lighter skin, and darker brown on deeper skin tones.

THAT CAN TRIGGER ECZEMA?

Many factors can cause eczema flare-ups and symptoms, and these can often vary person to person. Common triggers include weather and temperature changes, household irritants, swimming, diet, stress or hormonal changes.

IS THERE A CURE FOR ECZEMA?

Unfortunately, there is no miracle cure! For some people, eczema goes away over time, however for others, it remains a lifelong condition. There are, however, many ways to ease eczema symptoms, which can help prevent further irritation.

HOW CAN YOU MANAGE ECZEMA SYMPTOMS?

Keeping your skin moisturised is key to managing eczema. At Childs Farm and Farmologie, we recommend applying an instantly hydrating moisturiser as you get out of the bath and shower, and regularly reapplying as needed throughout the day. Wearing natural materials such as cotton, keeping your home cool, and avoiding using harsh skincare, soaps or detergents may also provide relief for symptoms.
